Alabama rot has featured in the press again. Very sadly a cocker spaniel died from this poorly understood disease in Wiltshire this month and there have been other confirmed cases across the country. However, we want to stress that this remains extremely rare and should not prevent you from exercising your dogs as normal. It seems sensible though to understand how the disease presents so that you can be aware of the symptoms. Ulcerated skin lesions especially on the limbs, body and tongue can appear without any known injury, followed by tiredness, reduced appetite and vomiting. Blood tests show kidney failure.
There is an excellent website about the disease and with an up to date map of where cases have been seen. Please be reassured that we are on the lookout for any suspicious cases and that specialist help is available from the team leading the research.
