The Bedford Road in Aspley Guise will be closed from 24th July until 13th August. Diversions are in place through Husborne Crawley and Woburn, which might add a few minutes to your journey if you're travelling across from the M1 direction.

Vet Derek wins Virbac Great British Bark Off competition! June 2016

Today vets Derek & Emma took part in a bake off competition tutored & judged by Nancy Birtwhistle, winner of The Great British Bake Off 2014. The theme was animals and as we had just been studying parasitology, Derek's snail, flea & tick cakes went down a storm and he is now the proud owner of an engraved cake slice! The Greensands team will be expecting more baked goods from this hidden talent.

Canine parvovirus is in this area, March 2016

Sadly we have seen 2 confirmed cases of parvovirus in puppies this last month. Both had arrived at their new homes already infected with the deadly virus and succumbed to its devastating effect despite early and intensive treatment. Local practices tell us they too have seen parvo cases in the last few months. The best way to prevent it affecting your dogs is to ensure their vaccinations are kept up to date and to only buy puppies from reputable breeders. Always ask to see proof that the mother's vaccinations are up to date.

Are pet insurers trying to dictate pet care?
You may have seen in the press the introduction by Royal Sun Alliance insurance group (they underwrite More Than, Tesco, M&S, John Lewis, Argos & Homebase) of a 'preferred referral network'. What does this mean for you?
Essentially, for those of you with pet insurance from any of these providers, we are now meant to refer you only to those practices which they have included on their list. To go elsewhere is possible, with pre-authorisation from your insurance company, but you will incur an additional £200 fee as well as your usual excess.
Our own preferred local specialist, Davies Vet Specialists, with whom we have developed a good working relationship, is not included in this list. Luckily, the referral hospitals at both Cambridge (Queens Veterinary school) and London University (Royal Vet College, in Potters Bar) are included (the universities of Derek & Emma respectively) so we can still arrange expert advice very locally for you.
Those of you insured with other companies will be unaffected.
We think it is important that we work closely with the pet owner, the referral centre and the insurer to keep bills manageable but patient care is our number one priority. We want to be able to refer you to recognised specialists when necessary - not everyone who offers referrals is a specialist.
What do you think? We'd welcome your feedback

Our nursing team has been expanded (Nov 2015)

We are pleased to welcome Athena Jarvis RVN to the nursing team. Athena is an experienced nurse, who spent some years working in an emergency, out of hours clinic, so she's dealt with most medical and surgical conditions. She left her last practice in Luton to be closer to her home in Woburn. She has two young boys, Jenson & Louis, who keep her busy outside of work.

Natalie's new baby was born last week!

Natalie & her partner James had a beautiful, healthy baby boy at the beginning of November. They have named him Douglas and we got to meet him at the surgery yesterday!

Staff changes in August 2015

Head nurse Mike has recently left us to take up a position at a pet insurance company. We all wish him the very best in his new career as he's been a real asset to the practice in the 7 years he worked here.

Joining our great nursing team is Heather Giles RVN who will be involved in all aspects of practice life. Heather started her nurse training here at Greensands in 2010 and rejoins us as an experienced & enthusiastic qualified nurse with a special interest in nutrition and pet behaviour. Along with Ellie, Sue and Natalie, the nurses will be offering more services and Nurse Clinics.

We also have a new part-time receptionist, Rena Dutnall, or 'Mrs D'. Rena has a wealth of dog training and showing experience so please do feel free to pick her brains if you need any tips!

We've been nominated for the Pet Plan Vet Awards 2015 in two categories!

The practice has been nominated for Practice of the Year in the Pet Plan Vet Awards 2015 and head nurse, Mike Swannell, has been nominated as Vet Nurse of the year. We are very proud of him & the rest of the team. The awards take place in April but the closing date for nominations is January 16th. If you feel that anyone in the team or the practice as a whole deserves a nomination, there is still time! Simply follow this link
